Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Beto, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side into third place in the Premier League, a handful of points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

The Merseyside club remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have faded somewhat and fans flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

The forward and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of recognised centre-forwards - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after coming on for Beto in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
