Three Lions Coach Explains The Philosophy: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Today, he's dedicated on helping the head coach win the World Cup in 2026. The road from player to coach commenced through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He realized his calling.

Rapid Rise

The coach's journey is incredible. Starting as Paul Cook’s assistant, he built a standing through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His stints with teams included top European clubs, while also serving in international positions with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak according to him.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, each day, each phase?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. We must create a methodical process that allows us for optimal success.”

Obsession with Details

Passion, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Putting in long hours all the time, they both test boundaries. The approach involve mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions ahead of the tournament in North America, and building a true team. He stresses “Team England” and avoids language like “international break”.

“It's not time off or a break,” Barry says. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Ambitious Trainers

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master all parts of the match,” Barry affirms. “We want to conquer every metre of the pitch and that’s what we spend long hours toward. It’s our job to not only anticipate of changes but to beat them and innovate. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to clarify complicated matters.

“There are 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and we must clarify it in that period. It's about moving it from thought to data to know-how to performance.

“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have since we took the job. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships with each player. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, feel them, touch them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. They've already ensured qualification by winning all six games without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that the football philosophy should represent all the positives from the top division,” Barry says. “The athleticism, the adaptability, the robustness, the work ethic. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape instead of heavy armour.

“To make it light, we need to provide an approach that enables them to move and run as they do in club games, that feels natural and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and focus more on action.

“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, attacking high up. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared now. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to increase tempo through midfield.”

Drive for Growth

His desire for improvement knows no bounds. During his education for the Uefa pro licence, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, since his group included stars including former players. For self-improvement, he went into tough situations he could find to hone his presentations. Including a prison locally, and he trained detainees in a football drill.

He earned his license with top honors, with his thesis – The Undervalued Set Piece, where he studied numerous set-plays – became a published work. Frank was one of those impressed and he hired Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff but not Barry.

His replacement at Stamford Bridge became Tuchel, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, the coach continued in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned in Germany, he brought Barry over of Chelsea to work together again. The FA see them as a double act similar to Southgate and Holland.
