The Reason Austen's Characters Remain So Familiar

For every enthusiast of Austen's work, the identities Lizzy, Jane, Kitty, and Lydia immediately bring to mind those iconic siblings from Pride and Prejudice.

However, in a fresh narrative which follows on this tale, attention turns to their often-overlooked character Mary who steps into the spotlight.

"I encountered [Jane] Austen as a kid from south London, believing Austen couldn't possibly have something relevant for someone like me," remarks a writer.

After reading Austen's works, though, Quintrell was struck by how connected she felt with Austen's characters. It was as though she "was acquainted with each person" within those historical narratives, she says.

An Awakening Tale

One actress, playing Jane Bennet, suggests that the character's story toward self-discovery proves to be incredibly significant today.

"It's utterly rewarding to watch her flourish and discover her own identity," she adds, pointing out how such narratives can be particularly important for young people manoeuvring through a complex world.

Another cast member, who plays Lydia, concurs, and states that the author's characters stand the test of time because people typically encounter these characters during important times in their lives, like while analysing the novel as a student.

Human Connections & Perceptive Commentary

The star who embodies Mary remarks on how Austen's witty narrative voice provides keen critiques without pushing a moral "on the reader".

Molly Wright's take, from the actress who plays Kitty Bennet, is how Austen was "remarkably progressive" regarding her perspectives on topics like "love and independence".

Hogg-Robinson adds how a contemporary TikTok trend directly reflects a central dynamic from Pride and Prejudice: the phrase '{if he wanted to, he would'.

"People were participating in it, and she grasped it 250 earlier," she clarifies.

The Reasons Austen's Stories Continues

According to the writer, while a long time have elapsed, "the core experiences that they go on really feel like they are timeless in the slightest."

That, she believes, is a key explanation why creatives seek to expand Austen's world.

In the end, there is a powerful call to everyone to find themselves in these stories. "Wherever your background, you'll find an element that resonates within these novels," the screenwriter states.
