The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while teasing at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The series' intro fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.

Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you start an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have a few surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on the audio platform and the video site.
