The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to experience a life-altering moment from Henry's youth—a moment that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies not within the cave. By aligning her view with the shape, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Did this make Henry evil?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements this season, the truth about the events in the tunnel was first explored the theatrical production The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft was that very thief.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about his research, the container would assuredly have some of the unique blood type. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would genetically impart to the children in Hawkins Lab.

A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the parallel world. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how Will Byers was controlled by the entity in the past.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror of that cave highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.

His confrontation has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
