Man City Three-Nil Man United: Lauren Hemp finds the net in City dominant win.

Just as bad weather hit the northwest the previous evening, City overwhelmed Manchester United away at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three-nil victory for Andrée Jeglertz’s side owing to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a performance that firmly established their title credentials as they strengthened their standing at the league summit.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This scoreline signalled successive league setbacks for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their trophy ambitions in serious doubt.

Manchester United's ability to manage domestic and European soccer with a limited roster has been a hotly discussed subject since they secured entry to the UCL. Considering the schedule, it always appeared this was the matchday that would seriously challenge this ability. Sadly for the visitors, they seemed fatigued all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having left its mark.

Tactical Shifts

Skinner had attempted to make changes with a a few adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Leah Galton all added vigor, although the dropping of the on-form Malard to the bench was questioned.

Manchester City, in opposition, have no such workload issues. Jeglertz made one change from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her first start since recovering from a fitness issue.

Dominant First Half

The trouble started to gather for the United boss and his team from the kickoff. This was a show of the strength from City whose potent attack manipulated and tore United open with a sublime first half display that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This placed City firmly in control and saw the visitors all at sea. Prior to this encounter, United had let in just six in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the wake of Manchester City's attacking flair.

Initial Opportunities

The early indicators came early when Miedema used her strength to bundle Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Hemp was at the center of everything early on, taking advantage of the space left by Riviere down United’s right flank. Her crosses were posing a threat and led to an chance for Hasegawa that Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple forays forwards, their direct style giving them alternatives in the flanks but they could not trouble Ayaka Yamashita. City, meanwhile, commanded the ball, taunting their opposition and trying to lure them of their defensive shape.

Scoring Spree

They converted their dominance with almost half an hour played when Fujino won the hosts a corner. A cross to the back post was directed across goal by Bunny Shaw for Rebecca Knaak to head in. It was Manchester City's 7th header of the season.

They extended their cushion with another pair of goals just before the half-time. When Rose was permitted to drive through the midfield from central defence, the play widened for the hosts. The influential Kerstin Casparij picked the ball up on the right before providing a precise driven ball for Bunny Shaw to tap home. A short time later, they had a third goal after a rapid shift in the ball saw Lauren Hemp afforded the opportunity to fire a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The most obvious substitution came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the contest. Former City player Jess Park came closest, hitting the upright, but the away team were creatively abject and did not manage to record a one shot on goal.

The home side, in contrast, could have increased their cushion when a delightful Vivianne Miedema pass sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Having failed to defeat any side who placed above them last season, the manager's side now have wins against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a favorable position after nine matches.
