Larian Studios Clarifies Its Use of Machine Learning for New Divinity Game

The developer behind acclaimed RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently teased its next major project, sparking significant anticipation within the player base. However, subsequent statements from the company's figurehead have brought clarity to the conversation, focusing on the developer's stance toward machine learning.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a new message, Larian's director detailed that the company is utilizing generative AI for particular ancillary tasks. These involve fleshing out presentation materials, producing initial artistic references, and writing placeholder dialogue.

Importantly, Vincke made clear that the end content in the game will be authored solely by actual writers. "Our team is developing everything ourselves," he affirmed.

We are actively expanding our roster of storytellers and are actively assembling narrative groups.

Since concept art is being specifically called out — we right now have 23 concept artists and have positions available for further talent.

All our efforts we do is incremental and designed to letting our team spend greater focus on making content.

Any AI system used well is additive to a creative team process, never a stand-in for their talent.

Responding to Feedback and Defining the Path

The revelation of employing this technology at first provoked concern among some the fanbase. In response, Vincke provided further clarification on online platforms.

"At Larian, we employ AI tools to gather inspiration, just like we use Google and art books," he wrote. "During the initial planning process we use it as a basic framework for composition which we then swap out with original artwork."

He continued, "Larian brings on talent for their unique talent, not for their ability to follow what a AI generates."

Focused Uses for Machine Learning

Vincke had in the past outlined the company's targeted approach to AI and ML, grouping its use into primary areas:

  • Streamlining Repetitive Work: This includes refining animations, audio processing, and technical processes like retargeting animations.
  • Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to quickly build rough versions of scenarios to validate concepts prior to expensive production.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how AI could one day facilitate new forms of gameplay, particularly in simulating unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.

He explicitly stated that core creative domains — like writing — are are absolutely not fields where the company is reducing artistic talent. In fact, Larian is recruiting more in these precise roles.

"Our studio is not releasing a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not considering cutting staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
