People have assembled throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-initiated attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.

Israel reacted by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other international bodies.

"The violent adversaries have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the leader remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will no longer pose a danger to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed state memorials until 16 October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.

A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was observed across the country.

Negotiation Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, both sides' delegations convened in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a second day of mediated discussions to review the terms of the agreement.

A prominent delegate involved in the discussions said that an night meeting of indirect talks started at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the earlier meeting finished without significant progress, because of differences over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not restart hostilities after the first phase of the arrangement.

He added that the discussions are "difficult and have still not produce any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the differences between the both parties.

Critical Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring truce
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
  • Future administration of the region

Civilian Feeling

In the city's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until each abducted person are released not a single person will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home once more, we can relax again. Then we can commence rebuild," she added.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the hostages. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are believed to be alive.

Protester a participant explained: "We must do any agreement required for the hostages to come back home. But we really want assurances that we will be protected."

Research now consistently show that approximately seventy percent of Israelis desire the conflict to finish in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the area of the gathering, grieving people assembled to remember the victims.

From that location, the sound of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people said the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.

In the main city, air and artillery strikes were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"As the dusk arrives, the fear arrives with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing previously, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, particularly my little child who places his face on me all night."

"Constantly we look at the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will come back to us."

Medical Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of six people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli bombing in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get help to the south region, medics reported.
