Google to Invest $15bn to Establish AI Computing Facility in India
Google's parent company Alphabet Inc. plans to commit $15 billion to establish an AI computing facility in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.
The infrastructure, that is planned in the harbor town of the city of Visakhapatnam, will become a segment of Google's global network of AI centres located in 12 countries.
"This represents the biggest AI facility that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world, apart from the US," Google Cloud's chief executive stated at an event in capital Delhi on Tuesday, mentioning that the financial commitment is to be distributed over the next five years.
The revelation occurs when American President Donald Trump has been encouraging US firms to focus on domestic investment.
India's Increasing Significance in AI Computing
The nation has emerged as a key destination for artificial intelligence facilities. The nation's low data costs and rapidly growing internet user base have turned it into a center for AI and cloud growth for major tech firms.
"The infrastructure will deliver our industry-leading technology to companies and individuals in the country, accelerating artificial intelligence advancement and stimulating expansion across the country," stated Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.
Initiative Particulars
A definitive arrangement to conclude the venture is scheduled for signing this Tuesday, the Andhra Pradesh government said.
"It is a massive leap for our state's technological advancement, progress, and worldwide position," remarked the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
The venture will merge computing and artificial intelligence facilities with sustainable power solutions and an broader fiber-optic system.
Data Infrastructure Plans
The project is included in the state government's plan to develop 6GW of data centre capacity by the year 2029.
Computing facilities are actual buildings that accommodate the computing and networking equipment that organizations use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.
They contain hosting servers, data storage systems and connectivity devices like network routers and security firewalls, along with the required energy and climate management infrastructure to operate them.
Financial Attractions
Across Andhra Pradesh, the state authorities has been offering subsidised land and electricity to attract international investors.
Sector Expansion
The nation's data center sector has expanded quickly over the past five years, surpassing the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and nearly tripling its capability from 2019.
