Alexander Zverev Takes On Auger-Aliassime in Season-Ending Championships Showdown
Introduction
The inherent challenges of tournament pool play mean at this point of the season-ending championships viewers are commonly confused, hastily looking for a computing device and striving to determine the mind-boggling qualification scenarios. But tonight’s match between Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime, fortunately, is easy. It's a direct elimination: the successful player sets up a final four battle against Alcaraz at this season-ending event; the defeated player heads out.
Zverev is the favourite for this: the third-ranked player is the player with greater achievements, has previously won at this tournament twice before and is ahead in their direct encounters with six victories against three defeats, having won both the games they've played on an indoor hard court.
Yet … this type of playing field on which Felix has secured the majority of his titles, he is full of confidence after his compelling comeback against Ben Shelton on recently and he took out Zverev in the US Open third round in August. Plus, the court pace is quicker in the host city than at the US Open venue, which provides an additional advantage in Auger-Aliassime's benefit.
Should Zverev be cautious, like he was against the Italian, and Felix aggressively challenges the German with his powerful serves and confident shots, it might very well be the young Canadian – the former prodigy who was once in line in front of the younger champions to succeed the Big Three – who earns the uncertain distinction of facing the top-ranked player tomorrow.
The match starts: at around 20:30 in the host city, 7.30pm GMT.
