Afghan Rulers Utilized Discarded British Equipment to Find Afghans That Served Alongside Allied Troops, Investigation Learns

A confidential source has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned classified devices permitting Afghanistan's rulers to identify Afghans who worked with western forces.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk

Person A, identified as Person A, stated that people concerned by the data leak were advised to change residences and switch their contact details to protect themselves from militant forces.

Lawmakers are investigating official response of a catastrophic disclosure of confidential data concerning almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to move to Britain to avoid militant rule.

The Information Breach Happened

A spreadsheet containing private information, such as identities, phone numbers and sometimes family information, was accidentally leaked by a staff member working at special operations center in February 2022.

The leak was discovered months later, when details of multiple applicants who had sought to relocate to the UK surfaced on social media.

Militant Technology

It appears there is a misunderstanding that militant forces do not have similar capabilities that allied forces use,” she told MPs.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they have it. If they have a contact number, they can locate your exact position. That's precisely what intelligence groups accomplished.”

When questioned about if militant forces had access to advanced decryption, Person A stated: “They possess all resources.”

Impact of the Information Leak

Initial findings submitted to the investigation estimated that approximately fifty relatives and associates of Afghans affected by the breach had been killed.

A superinjunction regarding the incident was put in force in last year and blocked any information concerning it from media reporting until recently.

Safety Measures

Because she was restricted, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told affected households they were assisting that they had “suspicions that certain devices had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they relocate if they could and altered their phone numbers. Those were the crucial data that, if the Taliban obtained this information, would cause identification and capture,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

Person A contested that an official review performed by an ex-government employee had been incorrect to conclude that the obtaining of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact present danger”.

“The thing to remember is that these Afghans are not standing up to the authorities; they remain concealed. All concerns relate to past work history.”

She detailed terrible treatment suffered by concerned people, including electrocution, waterboarding, and violent assaults.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to force households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
