A Standout Year for Kicking The Orb

I never truly grasped until I watched it with my dad. This occurred while I was staying to my childhood home smack in the heart of the international championship season. The Italian team was in contention, and that was a huge deal to my father, an newcomer from Abruzzo. Despite the fact that I consistently thought the game tedious, his excitement was completely captivating that it kept me glued to the television. The puzzle pieces clicked that day, instantly grasping all the captivating complexities the game had to offer and embracing its cultural importance. It was crucial that my father's team claim victory.

It's hard to articulate the draw of sports to those who don't get them. It takes to experience that epiphany where it all makes sense for yourself — or, as a minimum, you need the right guide present to demystify the complex regulations and showcase the true heart of the endeavor. Evidence from this year shows that this is something a digital title can accomplish. The last twelve months gave us three exceptional soccer games that explored the sport in radically separate, user-friendly manners.

The Heartfelt Narrative: Despelote

The pivotal entry of that triple is Despelote. The independent title is a slice-of-life story set in the nation of Ecuador. At first glance, it's a common story about a child maturing in the turn of the millennium and forging his place. However, all of this unfolds against the backdrop of an all-consuming historic moment: Ecuador has qualified for the World Cup, and it is the paramount thing happening in the protagonist's lives. Soccer matches are on every display TV. They are shown during weddings. It's the only thing anyone can discuss. Ball is life.

Against this backdrop, we follow the young hero develop. He isn't only navigating where he fits in at a house party, but where he fits into his neighborhood as well. The beautiful game is inseparable from his being, and it's by way of the sport that he uncovers himself as a devoted citizen. No game has gotten closer a video game has ever come to allowing me to comprehend my own father and the reason he was so glued to the World Cup all those years ago.

The Bodily Mastery: Rematch

While Despelote concentrates on the societal weight of soccer, two other releases from this year encapsulate the mechanics of the game itself in more approachable ways than standard simulations. Rematch, the latest game from the studio behind Sifu, explores the athleticism of soccer. This online experience reimagines the sport by recasting it as a fast-paced skirmish played between few players. It draws cues from titles like Rocket League to create an arcade-style match that's centered on precise coordination and exquisite ball control.

My summer was consumed with Rematch for a period this year. It appeared easy during my first few playthroughs, but each occasion I fired it up, I found greater complexity. Instead of just simple passes and shots, I figured out how to feint around opponents to evade a takeover. I mastered how to let go of the ball to stop someone from knocking it away. I drilled my skill moves until I could transform a flashy-looking move into a effective way to escape pressure. All these subtle techniques taught me about soccer in ways I could never appreciate as a passive observer. I emerged with a deeper understanding for the critical role body control plays in the game, finally seeing what a physically demanding pursuit it truly is.

The Tactical Puzzle: Pup Champs

Whereas Rematch illuminated the physical side of soccer, Pup Champs playfully illustrated the cerebral side. The latest title from the team behind Golf Peaks, Pup Champs is a turn-based football puzzle game starring canine athletes. Every level asks you to maneuver a few pups on a field and shoot the ball into a net. Straightforward, but the complexity comes from the fact that each dog has a unique kick pattern, they can only move a limited number of spaces, and there are hazards to contend with. Beating a stage demands smart planning and a firm grasp of the playing area. You get the impression like you're directing a high school soccer team, drawing up the winning plays to lead your pups to glory. It's not a realistic version of the sports by any means, but it's a charming companion piece to Rematch.

The Future of Sports Games

Of course, there were also more games about soccer, as expected. Annual franchises came out right on schedule and popular strategy titles made their highly anticipated return. However, thanks to these particular titles, I spent 2025 thinking about soccer more than I have in years. Games gave me a window into the physical artistry that goes into a pursuit I'll simply never be very good at (too much running!) and appreciate why soccer resonates to so many people. It's a notable trend in interactive entertainment I hope to see persist, with more creative approaches to sports games that seek to convey the spirit of a game rather than simulating it 1:1. And, a handful of additional games accomplished this for other athletic pursuits this year, whether it was the exhilarating bicycle races of Wheel World or the artistic odyssey of Skate Story. Even if you aren't a fan of sports, there are increasingly more games out there that are ready to invite you into the fandom.
